STA Laptop Setup

Initial Setup

  • Make sure to plug-in your laptop first thing
  • After turning on your laptop, select your Preferred Language, the region you are setting up the laptop (United States) and your keyboard layout
  • Connect to ISU-SECURE with your ISU portal login information. If you happen to be off-campus, any network should work for initial setup just be sure to sign into ISU-SECURE while on campus.
  • Accept the Windows 10 Agreement 
  • Set up your laptop for personal use
    • Do NOT set up your account with your @sycamores.indstate.edu account
    • Use a personal email address or create an offline account (Shown on screen)
  • Name the PC if prompted to and create a password for the laptop
  • Set and agree to your privacy settings
  • Continue to accept or choose to set up later, any additional services offered to you (i.e. Cortana, location preferences, etc.)

On the Laptop

Once you're logged in and are in Windows you'll want to log in or install several applications from OIT’s website so you have them readily available once classes begin.

  • All Microsoft Office products that ISU provides will already be on the laptop. Open up Word, Excel, etc. and you will be asked to log in. Log in with your University (@sycamores.indstate.edu) email and you’ll be given access.
  • Log in to the  ISU Portal :
    • Once you’ve logged in to the ISU Portal, go to the Academic Software for ISU Students knowledge base article.
    • This article provides general software for your laptop that the University provides for free:
      • Download and install "Respondus Lockdown Browser". This is used by faculty for tests and quizzes taken in the class.
      • Download and install the student printer software located in the "Printers" section. This will provide you access to the student printers located across campus. You can find student printer locations here.
      • Any other software you need for classes should be provided to you by your professor at the beginning of your course or will be available in discipline specific computers labs (i.e. Adobe Creative Cloud, AutoCAD, etc.).
