Comparing Teams Meetings in Canvas vs Outlook

Introduction

Be aware when creating Teams Meetings in Canvas, with the Microsoft for Education LTI, and creating Teams Meetings in Outlook, there are differences that impact the meeting features.

If you launch a Teams Meeting from your Canvas course, the meeting will use the settings attached to the meeting created inside Canvas, not the settings from a similar or separate meeting you may have created in Outlook Calendar.

Information

Meetings created in Canvas have their own settings.

When you schedule a meeting through Microsoft for Education → Teams Meetings inside Canvas, that meeting is its own object with its own configuration. These meetings are associated with your Canvas course and are listed only in that course. The Canvas-created meeting will not inherit Outlook’s meeting options.

Canvas-generated meetings do appear in Outlook/Teams calendars, but remain separate.

When a Teams meeting is scheduled inside Canvas, it syncs to Outlook and Teams calendars for invited attendees but the settings are still governed by the way it was created through the Canvas Microsoft for Education LTI. The Outlook version is a mirror of the Canvas meeting, not an override.

Outlook-created meetings will not control Canvas-created meetings.

If you previously scheduled a meeting in Outlook for the same class time:

  • Those settings apply only to that Outlook meeting, not Canvas-created meetings.
  • If you created Teams Meetings before December 17, 2026, you will need to cancel Outlook-created meetings and recreate them in Canvas so the correct settings populate inside the LMS.

A meeting launched from the Canvas course uses the settings of the Canvas-created meeting. It does not use your Outlook meeting’s settings, even if the times or titles match.
