Blackboard Learn Software Integration

Description

Blackboard Learn is an enterprise Learning Management System.  Many different applications are integrated into the system.  Each integrated application must be evaluated and tested prior to being approved.

Standard Services and Features

The process for integration can be lengthy.

  1. After receiving a request, OIT will first perform a general review to ensure that we don’t have a comparable application in place.
  2. Then we will meet with the requestor and communicate with the vendor to fully document the use case and requirements.
  3. This is followed by a technical review to determine if the integration is feasible in the ISU environment.
  4. If the technical aspects are met, the request will be reviewed by the Academic Technology Advisory Committee to determine if the integration is in the best interests of the University.
  5. With ATAC approval, a project is created to schedule the testing and implementation plan.
  6. The project is reviewed by the Information Technology Governance Committee to determine if the resources are available.
  7. With ITGC approval, the project is implemented.
  8. Testing of the product commences. This process typically takes two months.
  9. If the product is determined to be operational, it will be added to the scheduled annual Blackboard update which occurs in May.

SLA:  You can expect this service to be completed in 30 business days. This means that OIT will have worked with you to submit the initial project request and review technical aspects.  Time to approval from the advisory boards will vary.

Constraints/Scope

Feature changes in Blackboard are scheduled for the May upgrade.  For this reason it is very important that integration requests be submitted as early as possible.  Requests submitted after December are unlikely to have enough time to be included in the following May.

Directions

Vendors will often contact faculty directly about Blackboard integration possibilities.  We are happy to send an OIT representative to participate in these discussions with faculty in order to give a clear idea of what is possible in the ISU environment.
