Microsoft Office Pro Plus FAQ

Introduction

Enrolled students and current employees (faculty and staff) can download and install Office Pro Plus on personally owned Windows or Mac computers, tablet devices (Windows, iPads, and Androids) including Office apps on smartphones. Office 365 Pro Plus is a version of Office that's available through your Office 365 account by logging in to https://portal.office.com. It includes the applications that you're familiar with, including Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Skype for Business, and Word. Office Pro Plus is a full version of Office.

Eligibility

Who is eligible for Office Pro Plus?

Office 365 Pro Plus is available to all enrolled students and current faculty and staff employees.

Are ISU retirees eligible for Office Pro Plus?

No. Retired faculty and staff are not eligible for the Office Pro Plus subscription.

Why are you calling it a “subscription”?

We call it a subscription because you will not own the software. You are only eligible to use it while you are either an enrolled student or current active employee of ISU.

When I leave ISU (i.e. graduate, terminate employment or retire) can I keep the software?

Your Office Pro Plus subscription will become “read only” 30 days after you leave the University. The Office Pro Plus subscription must be associated with an active user account. The Office desktop applications and mobile apps perform a routine check for user account status via the Internet. Office Pro Plus will be de-provisioned from your devices when you separate from ISU (i.e. when you are no longer an active employee or enrolled student), meaning your software will only be able to read documents, but you will not be able to edit or create new ones.

What if I don’t want to install Office Pro Plus on my personally owned computer?

You do not have to install Office Pro Plus on any device that you do not want to. You can use Office online through http://portal.office.com without installing anything on your personally owned devices. Office products that are available online are Word, OneNote, PowerPoint and Excel. The online products may not have all of the advanced features of the installed applications.

Number of Installs

How many computers/devices can I install Office Pro Plus on?

This subscription covers a fully-installed local Office experience across PCs (Windows 8 and 10), Macs, Windows, iPad and Android, tablets, and most mobile devices. Each user can install Office on a total of 5 devices including PCs, Macs, tablets (Windows, iPad, and Android), and smartphones.

What happens if I go over the number of installs I’m allowed?

You will not be able to install Office Pro Plus on that device so you will need to deactivate an install before you can. What if I want to remove an install from one of my computers or devices?

You have complete control to remove an Office Pro Plus install from any device from within your O365 account (ISU email). Installation

How do I install Office Pro Plus?

To install Office Pro Plus sign in to your http://portal.office.com using your ISU credentials. Once you have logged in follow the instructions at
https://support.office.com/en-us/article/download-and-install-or-reinstall-office-365-or-office-2019-on-a-pc-or-mac-4414eaaf-0478-48be-9c42-23adc4716658 for your particular computer or device.

Can I install Office Pro Plus on my home computer or personal devices?

Yes. You can install Office Pro Plus on your personally owned computers or devices. It is not to be used on ISU-owned computers (laptops or desktops).

What if I want to uninstall Office Pro Plus from one of my computers or devices?

You have complete control to remove an Office Pro Plus install from any device from within your O365 account (ISU email). If I already have a version of Office installed on a personally owned computer or device, do I need to uninstall it before installing Office Pro Plus?

It depends. If you have a current version of Office, Office Pro Plus will not allow you to install it because you already have a new version. If you have an old version you will have to uninstall the old version first before Office Pro Plus will install. What if I want a 64 bit version of Office Pro Plus?

The 32 bit version is offered by default. For Windows computers you will have the option to install 32 or 64 bit versions. The decision to run one or the other rests on whether you currently use 64 bit versions (some third-party software may not work with the 64 bit version).

Will faculty and staff be required to install Office Pro Plus on their ISU-owned computers?

No. This subscription has nothing to do with ISU-owned computers. The Office Pro Plus subscription is only for personally owned computers and devices.

What if I would like training on Microsoft Office Pro Plus or other Microsoft products?

How do install Office Pro Plus apps on my smartphone or other mobile device?

You can install Office Pro Plus apps on your smartphone or other mobile device by accessing your app store on your device. You will then look up the Microsoft app (e.g. Word, Excel or PowerPoint) and download to your phone. You will need authenticate by using your ISU username and password. What products will be installed?

Yes. As a subscription service, updates to the various applications will occur on a regular basis to allow you to stay up-to-date with the most current versions.

Will Office Pro Plus update automatically once it is installed?

The software available with this subscription includes the most current version of: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, OneNote and Skype for Business and Publisher and Access for Windows computers.

Miscellaneous

What do I do if I get a yellow bar on the top of my screen saying I cannot edit in Office on a Mac?

It looks like an activation problem.  First, verify what license is showing up.

1. Open Office 365 (Portal.office.com)

2. Click on your picture or initials in a circle in the upper right corner

3. Select “My account”

4. Click “View Subscriptions”

5. Copy what shows up in this screen to a document.

6. Open a ticket so we can investigate this issue and attach the screen shot.

In the meantime, you can attempt refresh your license by opening any document that will give you the yellow bar error.

1. On the yellow bar, click “OK”

2. Select “Use Another Account”

3. Log in with your ISU email and password.

This may take a few minutes while it reactivates your license..
