Introduction
Indiana State University’s network systems are provided as an essential and required service to students, faculty, staff, and visitors with emphasis on ensuring that academic and business functions are maintained while addressing Internet of Things (IoT) which includes consumer and entertainment services with a best-effort approach due to limited staff resources.
Service Level Agreement
Services used for non-academic purposes, including entertainment, gaming, streaming, social media platforms, and other IoT devices will be supported on a best-effort basis with a lower priority. Due to limited staff resources, these issues will be addressed as time permits, with no guaranteed response time. In periods of high demand on academic or business services, support for consumer and entertainment services may be delayed or deferred or non-resolvable. This includes:
- Gaming consoles and PC online gaming
- Streaming services (e.g., Netflix, Hulu, Spotify)
- Personal entertainment devices (e.g., smart TVs, media players)
- Social media applications and other non-essential online activities
- IoT devices used for other functions.
The list of devices that can be connected to Internet is a seemingly endless array of types and features. While there is a desire to leverage these technologies for potential academic or business purposes of the university. These devices tend to be not necessarily very secure and are not designed to work in an enterprise grade network. Therefore we do not directly support or service them. If a department has a specific desire / need, they should consult with the Office of Information Technology before purchasing and attempting to install the device(s).
