File Storage Quotas
A file storage quota is the maximum amount of storage space allocated to a course or user for uploading and storing files within Canvas.
Default Course Storage Quota
All Canvas courses at Indiana State University are assigned a default course storage of 1GB for videos, documents, and other media to uploaded into the course. Instructors are strongly encouraged to make use of cloud storage options available on campus in order to avoid filling up their per-course quota.

File Storage Quota Exceeded
If your course storage may have exceeded its assigned 1GB of storage, if the following appear:
- "File size exceeds quota" error message
- Check the course Files tab to see the amount of space used.
Requesting Additional Storage
If you have exceeded the course storage quota, you may request a 1GB increase by submitting a Canvas-Report an Issue ticket. A request will not be granted before the course storage reaches its current limit.
Best Practices for Course Storage Usage
- Media (Audio/Video) Files:
- Upload video files into Canvas Studio via your OneDrive or from Vimeo/YouTube
- Once video files are uploaded into your Studio account, then you can embed them into your Canvas course
- Compress Files
- Reduce file sizes for images, PDFs, and videos
- Use compression tools before uploading
- Clean Up Unused Files
- Monitor Storage Regularly
- Check storage use via Files tab in Canvas
- Plan ahead before reaching the limit
