BYOD stations - Dual monitor docking station setup for laptop users

Summary

Instruction for students to utilize the dual display setups in HMSU, Library, and TA246. These setups provide access to wired network connection as well for faster internet speed.

Introduction

Coming Fall Semester 2022, BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) stations with dual monitor and high speed network connections are setup in several areas across campus to allow students to use their laptop as desktops, either using USB 3.0 or USB-C connections. This article will provide instructions on how to connect your laptop to these docking stations.

Steps

The following steps will describe how to setup your Windows or Mac laptop for use at these BYOD stations.

Windows users

For Windows 10 and 11 users, the setup is very simple.  Once you determine the connection your laptop has, just plug in the USB or USB-C cable to your laptop and wait for approximately a minute for your laptop to recognize the dock, monitor, and network connection.  During this time, the drivers are being install automatically on your laptop.  If it does not recognize it after couple minutes, you will need to install the driver. Follow the link above to obtain the driver.

For all other versions of Windows, please download the Windows driver and install the version that works with the version of Windows you have on your laptop.

Mac users:

For Mac OS X users: This setup has been tested with Catalina (10.15) and MacOS 12 Monterey.

  1.  Download the driver from the link above.  Select MAC to download the driver.

  1. Install the driver by double clicking on the driver package for your version.

NOTE:  This docking hardware only supports Mac OS X 10.14, 10.15, Mac OS 11, and Mac OS 12.

  1. Select the Continue button on the Installer screen. 

  1. Click on the Continue button on the Software License Agreement dialog box.

 

  1. Click on the Agree button to accept the license agreement.

 

  1. Click on Install to start the installation process.

 

  1. Click on Use Password to allow the installation to proceed.

  1. Click on the Close button when the successful installation dialog box appears.

 

  1. Click on the Close button to complete the installation.

 

  1. Click on the DisplayLink Manager Notification dialog box on upper right hand corner.

 

  1. Click on the Open System Preferences button when the Screen Recording dialog box appears. 

  1. Click on the padlock icon (lower left hand corner) on the Security and Privacy dialog box

  1. Enter password if the prompt appears.
  2. Click on Quit and Reopen to continue.

  1. Plug the USB/USB-C cable to your laptop.

Additional Information

Your laptop should now display the dual display as extended mode.  You can make changes to the display setting as you please from the Display settings of the System Preferences. If you need additional assistance, please contact x2910 Option 1 or Option 3.
