OIT Services Update - Spring 2021

Introduction

As we ease in to Spring 2021, we are all dealing with the new 'normal' and the changes to our day to day routines and OIT is no exception. Operational changes that were put in place for Fall 2020 will continue for Spring 2021. Our new and returning customers should take a moment to review the changes. Here is a summary of key service offerings, operational changes, and things you may need to know about technology at ISU for Spring 2021.

Sections are provided below for students, faculty, and staff.

Students

Zoom

Zoom licenses are available for all ISU students, faculty and staff.  Accounts can be activated by going to https://indstate-edu.zoom.us and signing in with your ISU email and password.   Once you activate your ISU license, you are ready for class!  Zoom can be accessed through Blackboard, and that is the best way to get to it for an individual class.

Technology Requirements for Classes

  • Think about power

Many of you will have classes with online components mixed in with face-to-face sessions throughout the day.  You will need to make sure to charge your laptop fully at night, and you will need to pay attention to where you can charge your laptop during class or between classes.

  • Headsets/earbuds

When using Zoom in a class, even when you are in the classroom, it may be helpful to have a headset or earbuds to be able to hear and participate.  Earbuds should have a microphone so you can speak as well as hear from wherever you are participating in a Zoom session.

Technology Support

  • OIT is providing our usual support in the Technology Support Center (TSC) for software issues, possible virus situations, re-imaging, etc.
  • Please call us first, as many issues can be solved remotely:  812 -237-2910.
  • In order to maintain social distance and properly disinfect, the TSC is no longer able to help people who walk in without an appointment.  An appointment can be made here:  appointment sign up page

Technology Support Center (TSC) - Safety Guidelines

  • All technicians and customers are required to wear a mask.
  • The customer sitting area is disinfected between customers, with a disinfectant provided by Facilities.
  • Before returning a computer to a customer, a technician will disinfect the device.
  • We schedule appointments now for all those who need to come and see us.  These appointments are for a specific period of time, in order to manage the number of people in our area at a time. In order to maintain social distancing, if an issue cannot be resolved within the given appointment time, we will intake the device and provide a loaner where appropriate.

Hardware Repair

We are sending hardware to an offsite vendor for repair in many cases.  Turnaround times will be longer than normal.   OIT will provide a loaner for hardware repair situations.

Remote Software

We are working with individual faculty who require the use of specialized software in their classrooms:

  • Adobe:  We have licenses for Adobe software that is critical to certain classes (e.g. art, interior design); see your professor if you feel you need to use this software from off campus.
  • Apporto:  Certain classes held in computers may need to use this software, your professor will let you know if you need to use Apporto.

WiFi Access When Away from Campus

We have added capabilities that may be useful in certain locations.  For example:

  • Access to our network (ISU Secure) is available outdoors at the southern end of Parking Lots M and Q.
  • If you are away from ISU but at or near another university, you may find access to Eduroam is available.  Eduroam is a nationwide (and global) network that can provide a pathway to the internet.  Open your Network and Internet settings to see the list of network SSIDs available in an area, and look for Eduroam.  If you are in a place that has Eduroam access, you can log in with your ISU credentials to reach the internet.

Faculty

Zoom

Zoom licenses are available for all ISU students, faculty and staff.  Accounts can be activated by going to https://indstate-edu.zoom.us and signing in with your ISU email and password.  Your Zoom account will allow you to meet with up to 300 people.  For more information about Zoom, the FCTE has been offering many sessions and Zoom offers a great deal of training via text or video

Zoom has been integrated into Blackboard, but you must activate your account via the method above before it will connect correctly.  You can find Zoom in your Blackboard course by opening the "Tools" page.

Collaborate

A reminder:  Collaborate, the application primarily for use with distance classes, has been decommissioned.  This has been planned for some time and was communicated during academic year 2019-20.  If you have used Collaborate and you have not worked with OIT to replace it already, please contact the Instructional Tools Team at 812-237-2910 for assistance using Zoom and/or Yuja.

Classroom Technology

Most generally-scheduled classrooms will have a ceiling microphone for use with Zoom and other technologies.  See the article about General Classrooms in the Additional Resources section at the bottom of this article for more information on technology in our classrooms.  Practicing before the first day of classes is critical if you are using a new technology!  Practice in the classrooms you will use prior to classes starting, to confirm the equipment in place and how it will work for your classes.  And please do call the Classroom and Event Technology Support team at 812-237-2690 if you have issues or you would like some assistance in your practice session.
